Yes, there is a crashing bug in version 1.6, when sock files from previous versions are opened. It's awful and I'm terribly embarassed.  Update 1.6.1 is uploaded and should show up in iTunes in a few days.

I'm doing final cleanup on the 1.6 update, which will be out sometime in July.

This will have export to PDF - which besides nicer printing and email, will let you open your socks in other apps - such as a pdf reader, or Knit Companion.

Next I'll focus on IOS7, making the interface work with the new look  (transparent blue buttons on top of a blue background simply does not work) and adding a couple of shiny new features.

SockCalc 1.5 is out.   Whoooooooooot!

The reason for the delay?  I tried to do to much.  Especially as the time since the last update got longer, I wanted to put more and more cool things in, and just got over my head.  Before I could finish, there'd be an IOS and Xcode update, and I'd have to relearn things. This is a slow process with a family and a career (that isn't iPhone development.)

Finally I got some sense and scaled all the way back. I fixed the things I absolutely had to fix - mostly display and rotation problems that came in with updates to IOS that changed the behaviors of things I as using.   To round it off, I put in one of the new features I was working on - the metric option.

Now you can use either English or Metric gauge and measurements, and you will get the same sock instructions either way. You can even flip back and forth - it will convert the numbers you've already entered to the new system.   I could watch it do that all day :o)

And the best news - I've got a lot more almost-ready new features. I'll be introducing more frequent updates with one or two new things.   The very next up is PDF export - you'll be able to open your sock instructions in any app on the device that can read PDF.

I mean it this time!

I'm reworking sockcalc from scratch using the latest features of Xcode. Trying to work the old code forward into the new development environment was not going well. The upside will be a beautiful and very stable sockcalc, with lots of new features. Really, I'm so excited I can barely type.

I'm working on the next update, but it is a little slow. Apple has updated the development tools and they are taking some getting used to. Until I get used to the new workflow, productivity is a bit of a struggle. I do like xcode4 though, so it will be worth it in the end.

Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year

I'm currently snowed into my house with my husband and kids and a mountain of Christmas leftovers. I have once more failed to burn the house down with the flaming pudding.

Eventually I will come out of my turkey coma and get back to work.

1.4 is out!

The update was approved and released on Thursday. If you are on Ravelry, you may see a new sockCalc banner add announcing the new version.

I will now put my virtual feet up (they are cozily dressed in handknit socks) and rest a bit over the holidays.

Improvements I've currently got on my list to work on are an option for metric measurements, and an option for different leg lengths. Comment here to vote for which should be next.

1.4 isn't yet completed, but getting very close - I'm planning to be done in time to clear review by Christmas. Sockly prezzies under your tree will be:

Toe up instructions - you asked for it, I'm working on it. The feature is pretty much done - I'm knitting the test sock so I can be sure I got it right.

Better access to support - the info pages will include buttons to send email to support@arachne.com if your ipod or iphone has mail configured. There will also be a button to view the support page of the website.

From the website you can download the sockCalc manual in pdf or epub format - and, you don't have to wait for this one, it is there now!

1.3 update coming - cool new features!

I've uploaded version 1.3, it is waiting for review to get posted to the App Store.

Look for a brand new button on the top left of the Browse view - it is the 'Item Action' button and it pops up a list of things you can do. To start there will be up to two options - Email and Print

Email will let you send your sockCalc generated instructions to yourself or friends, straight from the app. Instructions will be attached to the email as an html file - you can save the file to your computer and do what you like with it.

Print will only be available with IOS 4.2 - if you don't update your device to that version the button won't appear. With 4.2 you will be able to print wirelessly directly to printers that support Airprint. See the Apple site for more details on supported printers.

SockCalc 1.1 is on the way

It is packaged up and on line for review, with luck the update will be released the first week in October. With less luck, it might take another week or two.

next steps

Lest you think I'm sitting back and relaxing now that sockCalc is published, I'll tip you off on the update that is in progress.

Version 1.1 will support the iPad. It will be a universal binary, so you can buy it just once and run on both your iPhone/iPod touch and your iPad - it will behave differently to suit the device it is on.

Landscape mode is coming - I know the instructions will be easier to read with the extra width.

I've got a short list of features that didn't quite make the cut for version 1, support for landscape mode is the first thing on it. Leave a comment if there is anything you'd like to see sockCalc do in the future.
